LENT BEGINS ASH WEDNESDAY
Lent is a season of spiritual renewal. For centuries, the Church has given us this gift of 40 days to cleanse, renew, and prepare our hearts, minds, bodies, and spirits for the celebration of new life at Easter.
Lent is a solemn season–traditionally marked by the practices of prayer, fasting, and giving generously to those in need. But before we enter into this serious season, we have one last “big hurrah!” : we eat and drink and dance together at our Mardi Gras Party, and we burn the palm branches from last year’s Palm Sunday Service to create the ashes we’ll use for Ash Wednesday.
The season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is a solemn day when we repent of our sins and recall our mortality. The sign of the cross is traced, with ash, on our foreheads: “Remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” We observe Ash Wednesday at St. Mark’s with services at 7am, Noon, and 7pm. We also offer Children’s Chapel on Ash Wednesday for St. Mark’s Montessori School, and share “Ashes to Go” in St. Mark’s parking lot and on campus at UNM.

About Our Church
St. Mark’s is a progressive faith community centered in worship, inclusive to all, active in loving service and generous with the gifts that God has given us. Through our practices of worship, welcome, nurture, service and giving we are becoming a community and growing in intimacy with God. The things we really desire cannot be bought but must be lovingly crafted through relationships. Together we are blessed to be making something beautiful for God in our neighborhood.

St. Mark’s Children, Youth and Family Ministry
St. Mark’s children, youth and family ministry creates opportunities to grow in friendship with God and experience loving service to the world through music, story, small group discussion, community building, worship, outreach, laughter, art and fun.

New Here?
If you are a newcomer to our church, on any given Sunday morning, the first person to offer a welcome may be an usher, but don’t be surprised if during and after the service, other parishioners approach you to wish you peace and welcome. Fill out a newcomers’ card, get on our e-mail list to receive our newsletter, The Messenger, and join us for coffee and refreshments in our Parish Hall following the service. Scripture encourages us to recognize God in every person, and everyone who enters our door is welcome and important.
